Are salmon farms boring? - not this one

Just out of Takaka in Golden Bay, the Anatoki Salmon farm is a playground for young and old.  The sign at the gate invites you to catch your own food and/or feed the eels.  So to the eels we went where we could purchase some salmon bits to feed the eels from the same spot as athe legendary Maggie McCallum did throughout her life in the early 1900’s.

At the other end of the complex past the salmon breeding ponds, fishing rods were available so that we could try our hand at catching our food.  To fish was free, and there was a charge to process and smoke your catch – and if you were unlucky enough not to catch a salmon, then there was plenty on the menu done in a variety of ways.

What a great concept.  It could have been just a boring entrance fee to view the ponds and have some food and coffee, but the company went out of their way to make it fun with a user pay system.  It was cleverly done, and ensured that money was extracted in such a way that we, as the customers had a great time and didn’t mind in the least.
