Running an email campaign? Make your subject line count

It doesn't matter how compelling your email offer is, or how brilliantly your message is written. If your subject line isn't working right, your email will never get opened and your campaign will be a failure.   So keep your subject line short - about forty characters including spaces is ideal. This way, every subject line will communicate extremely quickly and have a little punch.

For example, "Who's minding the store? Security info." would be better expressed as "Five ways to prevent store theft," and

"Stop store thieves in their tracks" may be more effective as "Don't let thieves steal you blind."

If it’s punchy and well directed, your target market won’t be able to resist reading on.  Some good examples are

‘Ideas and inspiration to make you say WOW (Winston Marsh),

‘Seven tips to set you up for a great year’ (Jurek Leon) and of course our own

‘Simple strategies to improve your profitline.’

What do these headlines have in common?  They offer something to the reader – and what’s more, the content delivers on the promise.

So if you’re running an email campaign, spend some time on getting the subject line right and then follow through with great content..
